The Livingstone 2013 Initiative…The Legacy

Following on from the highly successful David Livingstone Bicentenary, The Livingstone 2013 Initiative is continuing to work with The Zambian Tourism Board and tour operators within Livingstone and Zambia to help raise further awareness of the region as a tourism destination of choice and to build on and develop the community projects which we set up in 2013.

International Festivals & Poker Events

Livingstone is the gateway to Zambia and the adrenalin capital of Africa. Not only will we have lots of the usual nail-bitingly, fun adrenalin outdoor activities on offer, but in 2013 we will be hosting a a series of international sporting, cultural and musical events and festivals running from 19 March (Livingstone”s actual birthday) through to 16 November, the date when David Livingstone first viewed The Victoria Falls back in 1855.

The publicity generated already both in the domestic and overseas media has been far greater than we hoped for  – National Geographic Traveller, The Sunday Times Travel Magazine, The Independent on Sunday, British Airways High Life Magazine SA, The BBC in the UK, BBC South Africa, Journeys magazine, The Zambezi Traveller and the inflight magazines of Proflight and South African Airlines, to name just a few.

Livingstone Zambia has been included in the National Geographic Traveller 2013 Hot List and The Sunday Times Travel Magazine as one of the “must-see” destinations for 2013. These articles and many more have set the tone for this exciting bicentennial year.

Livingstone, I presume?

Livingstone is named after the Victorian explorer Dr David Livingstone. Our town is situated by the Victoria Falls, on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River … a world heritage site and stunningly beautiful part of the world. Dr Livingstone, who was born in Scotland in 1813, was the first white man to discover The Victoria Falls, known here in Zambia as Mosi-oi-a-Tunya – the smoke that thunders.

NEWSFLASH!

Kenyan Airways Feature on The Victoria Falls, Livingstone

By Anthea Rowan | Kenyan Airways Inflight Magazine | March 2013

Eldest daughter says, ‘I’m going to bungee jump’.

‘I’m not!’ the rest of us chorus in unison.

We are whistling down to the Falls on Zambia’s mirror smooth roads. There is no traffic.

The Kafue River is wide and swollen after two months of rain; the farming country of

Mazabuka voluptuously green. We are headed to Livingstone, quaintly colonial still,

broad streets lined with houses with pretty wraparound verandahs

Fred Mwendapole

It is with very great sadness that we note the passing of Fred Mwendapole, one of our Trustees. His vision, energy, support and kindness have been crucial in the success of all that we at LACSEDO have been doing this year for the David Livingstone Bicentenary & Livingstone 2013 Initiative. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family at this very sad time.
