Historic Visit to Zambia by Livingstone and Stanley Descendants
The Livingstone Arts, Cultural & Sporting Events Development Organisation, in collaboration with The David Livingstone Bicentenary & Livingstone 2013 Initiative, is excited to announce a significant and historic event—the forthcoming visit of the direct descendants of Dr. David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley to Zambia. This visit, originally planned for this year, has been rescheduled to March next year, ensuring that all necessary preparations are in place to make it a momentous occasion.
A Reunion Over a Century in the Making
This visit is particularly noteworthy as it marks what is believed to be the first time that the descendants of these two legendary figures—who last met in 1871—will reunite on African soil. Dr. David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley are indelibly linked in history, not only for their contributions to exploration but also for the famous encounter when Stanley found Livingstone in Ujiji, Tanzania, uttering the immortal words, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”
The upcoming reunion of their descendants on Zambian soil is more than just a symbolic gesture. It is a celebration of the enduring legacy of these two men and the profound impact they had on the course of history, exploration, and the relationship between Africa and the Western world.
Honoring a Legacy
The visit has been organized as part of the ongoing commemorations marking the bicentenary of Dr. David Livingstone’s birth. These celebrations have provided an opportunity to reflect on the values that Livingstone stood for—exploration, education, medical advancement, and the fight against slavery. His legacy continues to inspire generations, and the presence of his descendants, alongside those of Stanley, adds a deeply personal dimension to these celebrations.
Looking Ahead
The rescheduling of the visit to March next year allows for even more comprehensive planning, ensuring that this reunion will be a truly memorable event. It will include a series of events and activities that highlight the rich history and cultural heritage of Zambia, as well as the ongoing impact of Livingstone’s and Stanley’s contributions to the country.
We are confident that this visit will not only honor the past but also strengthen the ties between Zambia and the Livingstone and Stanley families, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of our shared history.
