Celebrating Dr. Alex Malambo: A Journey from Zambia to the UK and Back
We are thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Alex Malambo on his recent graduation. Dr. Malambo’s journey has been an inspiring one, marked by dedication, perseverance, and a deep commitment to improving healthcare in Zambia. His story is a testament to the impact that international collaboration and support can have on individual lives and entire communities.
In 2014, with the generous support of one exceptional donor, The Livingstone Initiative had the privilege of bringing Alex to the UK for a three-month clinical attachment in ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) medicine. This opportunity was a significant step in his professional development, providing him with invaluable experience and exposure to advanced medical practices.
Following his time in the UK, the Zambian Government recognized the importance of his training and sponsored Alex for a five-year post-graduate ENT surgical program in Nairobi, Kenya. After years of rigorous study and hands-on training, Alex successfully graduated in 2020. He now works at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, where he continues to make a profound impact on the lives of his patients.
But Alex’s dedication doesn’t end there. Despite his commitments in Lusaka, he has chosen to spend one week each month running the ENT clinic in Livingstone. This clinic is particularly significant, as it was established to provide much-needed ENT services to the people of Southern Province. Before the clinic’s establishment, residents had to travel to Lusaka for treatment—a journey that was often prohibitively expensive and time-consuming.
Dr. Malambo was the first candidate in the Livingstone Zambia-Scotland Medical Exchange, a program born out of a desire to improve healthcare services in Zambia. When we initially approached Livingstone Central Hospital with the idea of an exchange, the hospital expressed a strong desire to open an ENT clinic. We knew this was a crucial initiative that could make a real difference in the lives of those living in Southern Province, and we were eager to help make it a reality.
Today, as we celebrate Alex’s achievements, we also celebrate the success of this collaborative effort. Dr. Malambo’s work is not only transforming healthcare in Zambia but also exemplifying the spirit of the Livingstone Initiative—bridging nations, sharing knowledge, and improving lives.
